For instant if the product that you are promoting is a information product, you can ask the merchant whether he will be able to give you a free review copy or not. Some of the good merchants will include the freebie in their affiliate tools or they will at least give you some discounts on buying the products.
If the product is a physical product, things will be same too. All you will need to do is to ASK. If you never ask, you will never know the answer.
Even if you have to buy the product at a retail price, it will still be worth it. The reasons are you will be able to personally know how good the product is, you will be able to tell your customer what is the great selling point of the product and what is the not so good selling point of the product. Your customer will not be really interested in the product that you will be promoting if you did not buy and use the product before.
